Legia Warszawa is the eighth club from Poland to play in the European North Basketball league.
Anwil Wloclawek won the maiden Final Four in 2022 at the Hala Mistrzow.
Five Polish clubs applied for the second ENBL season.
BM Stal Ostrow won the title, while Polski Cukier Start Lublin defeated King Szczecin – a Polish champion few months later – in a bronze medal match.
Zastal Zielona Gora and Trefl Sopot also played, while Anwil Wloclawek won the 2023 FIBA Europe Cup.
Polski Cukier Start Lublin and Zastal Zielona Gora returned for another season.
This summer Polish capital Warsaw entered the stage.
Dziki Warszawa joined the ENBL in May 2024.
Warsaw has hosted the EuroBasket 2009, the EURO 2012, the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men`s World Championship and many other events, including the EWBL finals in 2023 and 2024.
Warsaw was the European Capital of Sport in 2008.
It`s a home of the world`s number one tennis player Iga Świątek and has a lively sports community.
Legia was formed between 5 and 15 March 1916 as the main football club of the Polish Legions.
Two years later, in 1918, Poland re-appeared as an independent country after 123 years.
Legia Warszawa basketball section began operating in 1929.
The first game of the Club took place on December 8, 1929.
After World War II, the Club came back to life in 1947, thanks to Witold Serwatowski.
Legia advanced to the highest division in 1951 when team was rewarded for a great play at the Polish Spartakiade.
Tadeusz Ulatowski`s team received a nickname “Zielony Kanonierzy” – the Green Cannons – from the journalists after 21 years in the highest division.
A new motto ”Odrodzenie Potęgi” – the Rebirth of Power – was introduced in 2010.
Seven years later, in 2017, Legia was promoted to the Energa Basket League or PLK.
Legia Warszawa made the PLK playoffs in 2019 and improved to the fourth place in 2021.
A year later Legia returned to the Polish finals for the first time since 1969 and played at the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIBA Europe Cup.
Team finished fourth in 2023 and won the Polish Cup in February 2024.
Legia has a new head coach – Ivica Skelin.
Born in the Adriatic coast side city of Split, Croatian strategist has worked in the BeNeLux countries for many years.
Skelin was the head coach of Donar Groningen (2012-2015) and won the Dutch championship in 2014.
He also won two Dutch Cups (2014, 2015) and a Dutch Super Cup in 2015.
Skelin was recognized as the Dutch Basketball league Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2015.
He recently coached the Antwerp Giants (2022-2024) and added more success, winning the 2023 Belgian Cup.
Skelin was named the 2023 BNXT league Coach of the Year.
From 2011 to 2014 and again from 2016 to 2017 Skelin served as an assistant coach of the Croatia national team under head coaches Josip Vrankovič, Jasmin Repeša and Aleksandar Petrovič.
Legia won nine trophies in Polish competitions, including seven Polish Championships (1956, 1957, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1966, 1969) and two Polish Cups (1970, 2024).
Warsaw club finished second in 1953, 1955, 1958, 1968 and 2022.
Legia reached the quarterfinals of FIBA European Champions Cup four times (1958, 1961, 1962, 1964).
The Green Cannons also played at the quarterfinals of the FIBA European Cup Winners Cup in 1969 and 1971.
Last but not least Legia made it to the FIBA Europe Cup quarterfinals in 2022 and 2024.
